An Interesting Historical Survey of Western Magic Texts
By Thaumagnost
I read Christopher McIntosh's The Devil's Bookshelf (1985) after reading Owen Davies' recent Grimoires: A History of Magic Books (2009) which recommended it. Although Davies' longer, more detailed text surpasses McIntosh's book in many ways, the latter is still an enjoyable read and includes some information not found in Davies' text. Both books address the topic of magic texts with a focus on grimoires. Those with a strong interest in grimoires should obtain a copy of The Devil's Bookshelf, especially if they are the type of book collectors, like myself, who own Waite's The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts (later revised and retitled The Book of Ceremonial Magic) and Shah's The Secret Lore of Magic: Books of the Sorcerers, which are older but still useful volumes which contain extracts from various grimoires. McIntosh's title can be misleading since some of the magic he discusses is not related to the Devil or conjuring demons, although these are discussed. The author's view is that "magic grows out of religion, and the grimoires belong to a religious tradition" (Intro, pages 12 - 13). Also, at the end of Chapter 1 he states: "... I shall touch only incidentally on so-called 'black' magic. I shall concentrate on the body of magical tradition that is known to us in the western world, excluding alchemy which I shall only touch on briefly as it would demand a separate study. I shall also include a certain amount of information about oriental, chiefly Tibetan, magic on account of its striking parallels with the western form" (page 20).

Much has been published on the subject of magic, including grimoires, since McIntosh's book was published, but some of his resources are still referenced by others and useful today such as Lynn Thorndike's A History of Magic and Experimental Science, Herbert Leventhal's In the Shadow of the Enlightenment: Occultism and Renaissance Science in Eighteenth-Century America, E. M. Butler's Ritual Magic, Frances A. Yates' Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition, among others referenced in his bibliography, including Waite's and Shah's books mentioned above. Older translations of grimoires available at the time are used, although newer translations by Joseph Peterson, Steven Skinner, David Rankine and others are available today.

McIntosh's text is divided into two parts with 22 chapters as follows: PART I: Magical Writings Through the Ages, 1 - The World of the Magician, 2 - The Roots of the Occult Tradition, 3 - Early Magical Texts, 4 - All Solomon's Wisdom, 5 - Other Names to Conjure With, 6 - Magic and the Church, 7 - Doctor Universalis, 8 - The Strange Case of Nicolas Flamel and the Book of Abraham the Jew, 9 - The Faust Legend, 10 - The Golden Age of Magic, 11 - John Dee and the Enochian Writings, 12 - The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, 13 - Magic in the Nineteenth Century, 14 - The Book of Abra-Melin, 15 - The Literature of Witchcraft, and Other Modern Grimoires, 16 - Grimoires in Literature, 17 - Talking of the Devil; PART II: Extracts from the Grimoires, 18 - A Magical Papyrus, 19 - Tibetan Magic, 20 - The Book of Secrets of Albertus Magnus, 21 - The Lemegeton, 22 - The Pauline Art of Solomon. The extracts are short with the exception of chapter 21 which borrows from Waite's previously mentioned book to list the spirits and their sigils from the Lemegeton. Although Part II is good for examples, the value of McIntosh's text is found primarily in Part I.
