Paediatric clinical examination

The "Paediatric Clinical Examination" is now in its fourth edition, and rightly so, because it is helpful to all working in pediatrics. Professor Denis Gill and consultant paediatrician Niall O'Brian from Children's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, have done a wonderful job with this small and handy pocketsize book for students, residents and others working with children.
The book has 11 chapters with introduction to pediatrics, a "form of veterinary medicine", history taking, approaching children, examination at different ages, systems examination, pediatrics as the "measuring doctor", hydration and nutrition, developmental assessment at different ages, the art of examining excreta, using your senses and finally pediatric tips and topics with sound advice.
The book is full of wonderful illustrations, funny and profound advice with quotations, like the words of Sir Dominic Corrigan (1853)" "The trouble with many doctors is not that they do not know enough but that they do not see enough" or the advice to teach thy tongue to say" "I do not know" (Rabbi Moses Maimonides or Rambam, 1135-1204).
All in all a very handy book for the student, the resident or other professional working with children. I had a lot of fun reading it.

Examination made easy for students

An easy and amusing read for students but requires a prior grounding in clinical skills. Useful but certainly not a must have and not the sort of book students can carry and refer to on the ward. Would have benefited from more appropriate tables and flow charts to refer to in the clinical setting.

Capital: In Manga! In one word, Brilliant!

Capital: In Manga! is a fantastically written and illustrated book, meant to act as a bridge to Karl Marx's original work, Das Kapital.
I feel that it succeeds brilliantly.
A joy to read, Capital In Manga effortlessly presents the main points of the original quickly, logically and unforgettably while leaving one wanting to learn more. A very effective bridge indeed!

This quick-paced book tells the story of Robin, who wants to become rich.
His quest for wealth involves many of the classic interactions with the Capitalist system, demonstrating its fatal flaws on many levels.
It's a great summary of capitalism that can be read quickly and easily and leaves you with a vivid impression of capitalism's inner workings as well as its barbarous cruelty.

The book itself is in Japanese Manga style, appearing much like a comic book. This style works beautifully to convey the message of Kapital.
Unlike a "normal" comic book it contains depictions of violence, cruelty, despair and prostitution to build its case against capitalism, so this book is probably not suitable for children or more sensitive readers.

Having read it, I can't imagine being without a copy.
In my opinion, Capital: In Manga! is an absolute must-have for any library.

Very good intro to the concepts

Capital, in MANGA! is a great adaptation of the themes of Karl Marx's capital, turning a dry and often complex book regarding political economy into an approachable story about a cheese maker turned capitalist who through the pressures of always making more money becomes a monster who doesn't recognize himself. The story shows the contradictions of capital, of how working for money enslaves us to it. How the demands of more and more productivity leads to more suffering for the workers.

A decent intro, but lacks development

Capital-in manga is about 190 pages of manga that attempts to bring out the problems of capitalism to light, exposing the need for something else. My first critique obviously is that the book is short for paying nearly $30, where usually that price gets me about 600 pages of manga.

It is a decent introduction to marx, and perhaps a good story if you want the general idea, ie what is a commodity, what is the relationship between worker and owner, who is the petite bourgeoisie, and why a marxist thinks that the pursuit of the money is illogical when compared to the intangible value of human dignity. This story does give you the basic framework.

However,
the characters are more or less two dimensional, or straw men at best. If this is to be considered a parable...then it works well enough, but to stand on its own, not so much. I would have liked to have seen some development from our characters, particularly the struggles of the main protagonist in his attempt to accumulate capital, as well as the "marxist" proletariat worker who is attempting to break free his chains. The story glosses over them and in a few lines of dialogue seems to believe that its enough to gain emotional attachment to the cause, but the reality is far from it. what we get is a "knowing" of someone's trouble but not enough to actually empathize with the characters. [perhaps this story itself suffers from being efficient over being high minded]

lastly, this is a partial critique, (but i wouldn't mind if the story itself took its time to be emotionally driving) i would have liked to have seen some more commentary on "alienation" its a partial critique because marx only alludes to the concept but is more developed by future thinkers, ie, the illusion of capitalism that everyone can be rich, and/or (pending on context) the disassociation between what one is and what one thinks he is. the concept could have allowed for more depth for all the characters instead of just directly reinforcing concepts.

is the story bad? no...i just find it a bit forgettable. you learn the terms...but you could find it on wiki. if you want something that really tells the problems of the poor....just take a nice listen of the 25th anniversary of les miserables. even the anime "C:the money of soul and possibility" as greatly flawed as the show is, does more to show the problems and human cost of money than this. i am pretty disappointed for the seeming half baked approach of a good story, sacrificed to be a half textbook of marx (i would have gotten better with a "marxism: in manga" edition) but if you just want the basics...its not bad.

An excellent, informed

An excellent, informed, wide-ranging analysis of what the arts might do in the service of communicating climate change. Ghosh's three part structure ("Stories," "History," "Politics") allows him to cover a remarkable breadth of social conditions which have left us unprepared and perhaps unable to face the climate challenge. Especially pointed in its description of what it sees as the challenges for Asia, and for South Asia specifically, in gearing up for this new era already upon us.

Ghosh's inquiry into the uncanny reality of the Anthropocene reveals connections between colonialism, capitalism, carbon politics, and rising oceans that really have been "unthinkable" in American and European non-fiction. While I would have preferred that Ghosh acknowledge the value of science fiction writing on climate change, I believe this book is necessary reading for anyone engaged in untangling the patterns of thought and action with which we are collectively enacting mass extinction.

Faulty Research

While much of this book brilliantly exposes the problem we have with coming to grips with climate change--in many different types of narratives, such as historically and politically--the one glaring error is Ghosh's assumption that artists and authors aren't properly dealing with climate change in their works. This is so very untrue. I work with, and have worked with, climate change authors for over three years now; some very notable, some just starting out but still producing legitimately life-changing novels--if media paid attention. Maybe because I actively research and talk with authors and read these novels and short stories, I am more aware of what's actually happening--but then that would point to poor research in this area on Ghosh's end.

I agree that climate change in fiction perhaps shouldn't have one particular genre--that it's the story that counts, despite the newer genres readily trying to wrap their hands around global warming (Anthropocene fiction, climate fiction, solarpunk) and the older genres still doing the job (science fiction, literary fiction, speculative fiction, weird fiction).

That brings me to another point, that there does exist the assumption in Ghosh's book that literary fiction is the only fiction that matters when it comes to climate change.

Shouldn't this movement be readily open to all readers and writers, regardless of what genre the work is in? Genre fiction and literary fiction may be miles apart, yet many times the lines are blurry. Wassily Kandinsky s contributions as a theorist were arguably more influential on modern art than any of his paintings. In this work, first published in 1914, Kandinsky both promotes and defends a form of art in which painters express themselves in abstract terms independent of the material world around them, much as musicians do. Divided into two parts, "About General Aesthetic" (including an examination of geometrical forms) and "About Painting" (a discussion of the psychology of color and the language and form of color), the work offers an insight into the mind of one of the most renowned of all abstract painters and a preview of the art that he was to produce in the years to come. Russian painter WASSILY KANDINSKY (1866-1944), was one of the most famous artists of the 20th century and pioneered abstract art.

About the Author
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), whose works are contained in this book, not only practised art but also wrote on it extensively. He explored the theoretical aspects of the abstract art to which he ascribed, often drawing on his own work for examples, perhaps in an attempt to defend it by showing the care and thought he put into his art.

misleading and falsely advertised

Hugely misleading. This is actually Concerning the Spiritual in Art, with a different title. It is put forth as though it were a different book, which really is irritating. Having been misled by Amazon, I ordered the book, only to discover that I already owned it, since this book is no other than Concerning the Spiritual in Art. I was so excited to read something by Kandinsky that I had not read before, only to find that I had been duped and misled. I would like my money back.

Thinking in color

An incredible expose on theory behind art and thought-provoking insights behind abstract art in particular. Read this book in a day and walk away transformed by the intellectual transcendent nature of abstract art.

Misleading title, worst edition possible

Do not buy this. The title "The art of spiritual harmony" made me think it was a different book, but it is actually the same book as "Concerning the Spiritual in Art." However, this edition is absolutely awful. I got the kindle version. It was OCR scanned and the words were badly auto-detected with innumerable mistakes, there is no chapter, or paragraph structure, and all the images are gone. There is a lovely version of this book available in print and on Kindle through Amazon, called "Concerning the Spiritual in Art." Pay the extra couple bucks and get a readable book with pictures. It's a great read, and well worth the time.
