Good - but misleading title

Who wouldn’t want the tool to solve business problems? The British-Mexican Antonio Weiss has a varied and interesting history. With an academic background as an historian of the state and religion he moved on to become a management consultant doing work for the UK public sector. The author, also a contributing expert to Latin News and a Labor party activist, will soon publish an exploration of the religious beliefs of Margaret Thatcher funded by the Margaret Thatcher foundation.

Weiss’ basic thesis is that business leaders - like most people – often lack a method to solve problems. This book is meant to deliver a proven methodology to guide the reader successfully through the problem solving process. The subtitle is “Essential business-solving tools and techniques that every manager needs to know”. I like what Weiss has written but I also think the book misses its mark with regards to the thesis. It does not deliver problem-solving tools for managers; it delivers project management techniques for management consultants or project managers trying to deliver a recommendation to solve a business problem. Hence, the author delivers a McKinsey-BCG-Bain-type of process answer to a more broad and general topic. With that said the so-called OBTAIN-model is among the better descriptions of this type of process that I’ve read.

There are two parts to the book where the first by one chapter per letter describes the OBTAIN-project management process and the second part lists a number of business tools like the 4P’s of marketing, SWOT-analysis etc. In short the letters in OBTAIN stands for: Outline – frame the problem into a goal that you need to achieve; Break Down – separate the problem into manageable pieces that are easier to solve; Test –relatively early in the process a hypothetical solution should be developed and then this is tested, discarded or refined; Analyze – do the analysis to get to the root of the problem and verify your hypothesis; Imagine – come up with an innovative solution that is developed jointly with key stakeholders; Notify – have the right techniques to communicate the solution. In addition, there are the two steps (and chapters) on managing the stakeholders and managing the project team.

For each process step one or two useful tools (like for example the Hypothesis Tree or the Prioritization Matrix) are presented. I also liked the chapter on how to communicate the solution (not surprisingly with a McKinsey-Barbara Minto type of presentation structure). Part two of the book feels more like an appendix even though some of the tools, like De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats, perhaps can be said to be closer to the more generic theme of the subtitle.

When I come in contact with the early-hypothesis driven management consultant model I’m always reminded of a quotation from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes that has become popular among investors ”The temptation to form premature theories upon insufficient data is the bane of our profession” – the point being that if you decide on a solution too early your research process will risk falling victim to confirmatory bias. On the other hand it is obviously equally true that more information has declining marginal utility and if you decide too late a lot of effort will have been a waste of time. The consultant leans towards an earlier decision than the investor with regards to this trade off.

Further, I get the nagging feeling that such a strict process focus as in the OBTAIN-model could come in the way of solutions that really changes the playing field. The focus is to come up with “the right” solution that can be accepted by all stakeholders. This type of solution will probably lead to satisfied paying customers, but I’m not sure it goes further than that.

If you work at a corporate strategy department or are an aspiring management consultant this is a very useful book to read.

Caitlin was born blind, and when, newly arrived in tenth grade, she is offered a chance at an experimental procedure to give her sight, she leaps at it, despite previous disappointments. When she returns from the Tokyo hospital in which she underwent the procedure, it seems a failure. Soon enough, though, she discovers that, instead of reality, she is perceiving the Web. What’s particularly interesting is the background noise. Something strange is floating around behind the nodes of normal Webspace; a closer look reveals that, whatever it is, it’s not just meaningless noise. Caitlin’s story alternates with those of Hobo, a chimp whose claim to fame is being one of the first two apes to video-chat online; an entity of mysterious provenance; and a Chinese dissident blogger who is quite curious about why everything from outside China is blocked. Sawyer’s take on theories about the origin of consciousness, generated within the framework of an engaging story, is fascinating, and his approach to machine consciousness and the Internet is surprisingly fresh. --Regina Schroeder

Only the beginning and more wonders to come

Robert J. Sawyer's "[...]" opens up a few cans of worms and leaves us with a cliffhanger at the end so we can all speculate on what happens next. Without giving too much away, a brilliant but blind teenage girl is enlisted by a Japanese scientist for experimental eye surgery and when it is all done, a lot of interesting things occur. Meanwhile on the other side of the country there is a gorilla painting pictures of its caretaker and in China there is a suspicous avian flu outbreak that results in the Chinese government covering up some drastic action it took to deal with it. I expect Book Two will deal with these secondary issues in a bit more detail and find a way to link them to the main story.

Sawyer's writing style is approachable even for those who are not big Sci-Fi readers. Certainly the science is there (and accurate) but his books tend to deal more with the culture of the day and the way the characters respond to that while the science flutters by in the background. This was an enjoyable start, a fairly quick read, and I am looking forward to the next one.

Sawyers Best

Wake is thought provoking,a good read and an introduction to modern thought on human perception / pattern recognition. The side-play concerning the heroine and her father is not well done and raises more questions (such as why did her mother marry this bozo?)--however the concept of growing up with contrasting affecting by ones parents is a valid one.

The plot is pure science fiction and points to a plausible future maybe 30 years from now. The reader should pause now and again to think abut the issues Sawyer brings up on modern thought / science.

Wake held my interest to the end and is a kind of "feel-good" book. I can recommend it with out reservation

Sawyer plays to his strengths

WWW: Wake has all the hallmarks of a great Sawyer novel: intriguing premise, educational bits of knowledge spread throughout, making you feel like you are reading a great Chricton novel or a very engaging textbook, loads of Canadian trivia, and, most importantly, three-dimensional characters that live in the mind's eye and are people you care about.

Unlike most of his novels, where the main character is a middle-aged male Canadian intellectual with some sort of marital conflict, the star here is a 15-year old American math whiz who just happens to be blind and female. Another favorite Saywer novel, Factoring Humanity, also featured a female lead and the same sense of wonder and emotional depth is present here as well. Only one minor character comes off as a bit cliche during a conflict with Caitlin. I'll let you guess which one that is.

There are at least three plotlines that intersect here and, while this initial volume is fairly benign, with one big exception, there are hints at some sinister goings-on for parts two and three.

I never read his dinosaur trilogy, but this is at least as good as his Neanderthal triology, even though it has more of a leisurely pace, and there is not as much world-building going on. I am looking forward to the next volume. I just hope the story doesn't come true by then!

Inaccurate ramblings

Absolutely terrible. I didn't expect an in-depth look at any serial killer in this book, but I did expect facts and decent editing.

Some statements contradicted things that were stated just a few paragraphs before. The Green River Killer was once referred to as "Ed Ridgway". Some killers profiled do not meet the definition of "serial killer".

It's like the author threw this together based on what she remembered reading on Wikipedia, rather than actually doing research. On top of that, there were numerous grammar errors that even a pretty terrible editor should have caught.

Glad it was free.

Disappointing

While the content was interesting, the poor grammar was annoying. There were also places where the sequence of events was unclear or I wasn't sure whether something truly happened or was just rumored to have happened. All in all, I was glad I had just borrowed this book.

About the Author

Chas. W. Freeman, Jr., has been a career officer in the U.S. Foreign Service, ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War, and assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. He was a fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in 1994-95 and is the author of Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy (USIP Press) and Diplomat's Dictionary (USIP Press).

Excellent, Practical Handbook on Statecraft

Although this book contains only 140 pages of text, Freeman has managed to pack a lot of useful information into it. Its focus is on the practical application of statecraft. To quote Freeman, "statecraft is concerned with the application of the power of the state to other states and peoples. Diplomacy applies this power by persuasive appeals short of war." In other words, diplomacy is but one tool of statecraft. What makes this book rare is that the author is a career foreign service officer, in a bureau where the preservation of peace at any cost is often paramount. It is unusual at best to hear anyone from the Department of State to discuss the usefulness of the application of force or intelligence to international relations.
Arts of Power falls somewhere between the books of international theory and those social psychology books which are full of common-sense, yet contradictory aphorisms-- and it succeeds where the others fail. With a few exceptions, no decent practical guide to the application of statecraft has been written in centuries. Freeman has corrected this error, and in spades.

Dry but useful

Very interesting, but really a dictionary that assumes alot of foreign policy knowlege. I bought this is the hopes that it would be a great intro to foreign policy book and was dissappointed. Nonetheless, it will make a good reference book.

Exceptional Starting Point

Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy lays out a comprehensive theoretical framework explaining the interactions of states through their agents. The format follows a logical flow beginning with the nature of state power and interests and continues to how those powers and interests are expressed through diplomatic relations and concludes with a summary of the essential skills that enable diplomats to effectively serve the interests of their home nations.

This text is an excellent survey of the nature and form of diplomatic negotiations. As such, it serves as a starting point for understanding the distinct qualities of statecraft and diplomacy.

Based on real events and real people, this is a riveting story of a witch-hunting frenzy in a Moravian village (now in Czechoslovakia) around the year 1680. An old beggar woman is accused of witchcraft when she is caught saving a communion wafer to cure the midwife's cow, which has gone dry. An unscrupulous inquisitorial judge, eager to revive his flagging career, tortures the two women until they confess to being witches and incriminate numerous other people in the area. Fear or opportunism make even the leading citizens go along with the judge's outrageous verdicts, which result in dozens of people perishing at the stakes. While the novel is steeped in details of the 17th-century life, its chilling observations about the potential misuse of fanatical ideology are still very relevant.

A very interesting and detailed book!

I loved this book. The details were wonderful, and the translation excellent! This is the story of a little town in CZECHOSLOVAKIA in the 1900's that has been victim of the late witch hunts. It all starts with a rumour that a hag in town is using communion hosts to cast spells, this causes an amazing stir in the community. This is a great book, you find greed, lies, sex, and compassion all in the same book. The translation looses nothing of the original text. Quite interesting, specially when it was written in the 1800's.
