Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Voices That Matter), by David duChemin

What if your image could only communicate one thing: one major idea, overarching theme, or driving emotion? If you identified this, you’d discover your vision for that image—the internal, invisible guiding principle that directs both how you capture the image and how you develop it in the digital darkroom.
Without vision, you likely find yourself flailing both behind the camera and in front of the computer—indiscriminately shooting and arbitrarily moving sliders in hopes of stumbling upon something great every once in a while. With vision, you bring direction and intention to both the creation and development of all your images.

Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is about identifying your vision and using Lightroom’s Develop module to give voice—that outward expression—to your vision. Photographer David duChemin begins with the fundamentals of a vision-driven workflow, where he discusses everything from vision and style, to the importance of mood and color, to the crucial role of histograms and of getting the best possible digital negative to work with. After demonstrating how the Develop module’s tools affect the aesthetics of your image, duChemin then offers a straightforward approach to developing your images in accordance with your own personal vision: identify your intention, minimize the distractions, maximize the mood, and draw the viewer’s eye—all while leaving room for play and serendipity. Finally, duChemin applies this approach to 20 of his photographs as he takes you into his own digital darkroom and, beginning with the original RAW file, works step by step through the development of the final image.

“David duChemin’s images of people and landscapes never feel posed or artificial. There is a dignity and intimacy to his portraits of people living in impoverished conditions...This book is highly recommended for photographers seeking to refine their voice and style.”

Photography as Art
By Conrad J. Obregon
Most of the books about using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop explain to a greater or lesser degree what the sliders, buttons and menus do to change the look of an image, but most don't try to tell you how to put together these effects to create an artistic picture. This is David duChemin's goal in "Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom".

The book starts out with a few chapters devoted to explaining what the author means by vision and voice. He says that every photograph really contains three images: the one the author had in mind when he took the picture, the one captured by the camera and the one created in post processing. He then goes on to discuss a vision-driven workflow, emphasizing intention, aesthetics, and process. He lays out a few principles next, like making blacks black, utilizing the histogram and even shooting in raw. He then discusses each of the tools in the develop module of Lightroom, but rather then give you a technical explanation, he offers his ideas about how those tools can contribute to the photographer achieving his or her vision. He finishes the book with twenty of his own images (much like Ansel Adams, in "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs") in which he provides step by step descriptions of how he used Lightroom to transform those images into what he envisioned. There are copies of the images on-line that one can download to follow duChemin as he works the digital captures.

If you are one of those photographers who is interested in images that look as much like what was before your lens as possible, this probably isn't the book for you, although from my point of view, this book is probably just what you need. But if you are interested in creating (dare I say it) art, you must read this book.

As I read this book, I felt like I was watching a high-wire artist. So many authors say they will tell you how to be creative, and then end up explaining exposure and focus, but losing sight of the creativity. I kept waiting for duChemin to fall into the same trap, but he kept his footing all the way. Even when he told you that he had set, say, clarity to +90, I understood the artistic purpose of the move.

If you are familiar with Lightroom, you can just read the author's description of how he processed each picture. However, even skilled photographers will benefit from following along with the downloaded images.

This book will also prove useful to Photoshop users since the Adobe Camera Raw engine is the same as the Lightroom engine, although the latter has a more intuitive interface.

A great critic, Mark Schorer, spoke of technique as discovery, indicating that it was through the application of technique that the artist revealed his or her vision. David duChemin demonstrates the principle in this book.

Five star plus, if you're ready for it
By Stephen Kalman
First, a warning. This is NOT a book that goes into every menu and submenu in Lightroom and explains what the sliders do. If you want that kind of book, try the latest from Scott Kelby or Deke McLelland or a variety of others.

Next, a threat. If you bought this book thinking it was an item by item how to, and then trash it online, I'm going to break a chain letter rather than send it on to you and you'll have 7 years bad luck. Seriously, though. If this isn't what you thought it was when you bought it, return it or sell it. That wouldn't be the book's fault.

Finally, the gold star review...

DuChemin has several titles that talk about vision and voice. Many of them are very inexpensive eBooks available on his website,[...]. It's taken me about a year to understand what he's saying. I've got the voice part down, thanks to this book. When you see a picture from Ansel Adams or Anne Liebowitz, you don't need to see the signature to know who took it. In other creative genres, when you read about a hard-boiled detective, you know it is Hammet or not. Same with Monet or Picasso. They all have a voice.

Vision is a little harder to explain. When you take a picture, there was something that made you choose what to include or leave out, something that drew you to put camera to eye, something you wanted to capture. When you begin post processing, that initial view is rarely what you had in your mind. Vision is taking the image and making it tell the story you intended to tell, the way you wanted to tell it.

The first third of this book tries to explain both of these complimentary concepts in much more detail and in a much clearer manner than I've done here. (And with apologies to the author if I've messed it up; these aren't easy to define in a few words.)

After that, David takes you through his process, starting with a zeroed image (the RAW file from the camera) and explains what he did and why he did it from before he clicked the shutter to the moment he was ready to print. You do get to see sliders and adjustment brushes, but you see them in action; in context.

As David goes on to explain the process of realizing his vision (and by extension, as we readers use the concepts and techniques to realize ours) he talks about how people process images. He has a ten point bulleted list of what the eye goes to first. Things like Sharp before soft, warm colors before cool, etc. Then he writes a sentence that sums it all up, "This is the WHY of this book: understanding how to gently lead the eye through the image, to say to your viewer, 'Look here,' and to do them the courtesy of creating images that don't tire them out from the effort to discern important elements from unimportant ones."

If you are at a stage where you can benefit from guidance on how to make better pictures, as opposed to how to simply better exercise the features of your camera and software then this book is for you.

For me, it came at just exactly the right spot on my learning curve. More than that, when I read it again next year it will provide a second boost since I'll be able to absorb ideas that are still beyond my ability.

This book has my highest recommendation.

Ambitious in vision... brilliant in execution
By Dane Sanders
In my experience, books in the creative professions either have a bias toward the technical or the philosophical. It's clear which side of that continuum is more popular these days. It seems that the demand for "how to" is at an all time high... which is understandable given how much there is to learn how to use. That said, the "why" questions really ought to come first but at the pace the photo world is running, it doesn't seem that there's room for inconveniences like finding a personal vision and expressing a unique voice.

Then, along comes duChemin with this gift: a philosophically driven, technically sound book on putting Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom in its appropriate place... behind the artists vision... as instrumental for expressing one's voice. The technique isn't the end with this work... it's the means.

At first, I was nervous at the scope of ambition this book took on. But, in the end, the author does not disappoint. Making the case for placing vision central but then giving technical insight on what, when and how demystifies Lightroom as a tool while giving context to why its function can so ably serve its master... namely, the creative wielding that tool.

This is both an inviting book for the new photographer and reframe for those of us who've been at it for a while. I was genuinely inspired as I read and was moved to see my world a little differently because of it. More than inspiration though, it went one critical step further and offered me what I needed to more ably make good on my new dreams thanks to Adobe's powerful tool (the unsung hero in this review).

I believe this is the third book penned for photographers by deChemin. I hope he's just getting started though. When it comes to vision and voice, he's certainly found his. That said, I believe his legacy will be in how he empowers an industry to go further still.

This is a brilliant work and I highly recommend it.

Fun Coffee Table Book, Friends Guests and Family Love it
By El Brujo
This is one of those books that is actually as much fun to read as it is informative. I intentionally keep this book on my coffee table, for when friends or guests comes over, because they always get a kick at answering some of the questions and seeing how psychic they are. There are a few, "Check the Box" and see your answer, which are really interesting and everyone from my mom to my daughters enjoyed seeing how psychic they are.
The book also has beautiful bright pictures that impressive the eyes, and sections on Palmistry, Tea Leaf Reading, the Aura, Mind Over Matter, Mind Reading, The Chakras, Dreams, Tarot, Crystal Balls, Pendulums, Healing with the Hands, and the list goes on.
This book is on of my favorites, because it really sets the mood for a good time when friends or family come over. The Tests really are impressive, and fun, and every one who has been to my home, has fiddled through the book and taken the tests, even my skeptic brother answered the questions, and found out he was a "Closet" Shaman. Which of course awakened his curiosity. This really is a fun book, and a good intro to many Psychic and Occult mediums.

Very interesting
By A Customer
This book was very insightful and covered most all popular occult mediums. It has various tests to take and explains a lot about different types of psychic ability. I really liked the different chakra pages.
The reason I gave this book only 4 stars is because I felt there needed to be a little more detail added to some of the other catergories.
Overall, if your looking to learn about chakras and meditation this is a fantastic book.

Excerpt from On Yachts and Yacht Handling

My reason for writing this book is, that it is wanted; my excuse, thirty years' experience. In those years I have handled many boats, upon many waters.

You will find this book very different from other works on the same subject. In the first place, I believe that all text-books should be written in a manner to please, as well as to instruct; that they should be agreeable reading; and, aside from their teaching value, have a certain excellence as a writing. Again, there is nothing in literature so interesting as the autobiography, real or fictional. Nearly all our great works of fiction are of this class. Robinson Crusoe's history from any other lips than those of the castaway would lose half its interest; Gil Bias in the third person would lack warmth and be wholly devoid of its peculiar zest. The flavor of the individual is lost when you speak for, and not as him.

Great old resource, mediocre reproduction
By Chris Dale
This book is charmingly written and informative, even being over 100 years old. The art of sailing has not changed much since then, although his advice on choosing crafts, ropes, and anchors is all based on technology from the era. Modern ropes and anchors have all but displaced these older technologies, and fiberglass hulls complicate a lot of what he has to say about which craft to choose.

Fifth star withheld because page numbers are still in the text, often in the middle of words. I'd expect any paid ebook to have at least been read and edited before being put up for sale. It does however seem to be free of the obvious transcription errors that so frequently haunt these older texts.

Don't waste your money.
By carol neilson
It's easy to see why the author could not get anyone to publish this. With all the wide spacing and blank pages it could have been a 20 page booklet. It appears her infatuation with Rammstein lead singer Till Lindemann has led her to write a book of her conjectured poetic prose to make Rammstein's lyrics into songs with English lyrics that rhyme. The original German lyrics are not even listed in the book. Buy a book like "German made Simple" and actually learn some German words. This book teaches you nothing and is extremely overpriced. Rammstein's lyrics stand on their own.

Awesome book
By Till82
My only complaint is that all of their songs aren't in here. The translations convey a much better understanding of what the original songs in German are like than most of the straight word for word translations on the Internet.A friend and fellow Rammstein fan got me this for Christmas and I absolutely love it so far.A must have for any English speaking fans of Rammstein.
Please do the Messer translations!I have a copy and tried myself but didn't get very far using just an English-German dictionary.I'll be one of the first in line to buy it.

Great Book Idea
By Linda S. Urban
I found this book days after joking with my hubby that I needed a "Rammstein German" book (as opposed to the typical Learn German kind of book). So glad this was written, but it left me wanting more. I would really like to see the writer do a LBRB # 2 and do more song interpretations, which really brought the translations to life for me. Great idea by the author .

He spent less than a day in each city...
By Steve Rosse
In 1959, Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, was paid by the Sunday Times of London to travel for a month to the "world's most exciting cities" and report on them in a series of essays. These essays were anthologized in 1964 under the title "Thrilling Cities."

In just thirty days, Mr. Fleming visited fourteen cities. That gave him just two days in each city, if we assume he was somehow able to travel across continents in the blink of an eye. He wisely did not spend any of his precious time in museums. He did visit the "world's largest brothel" in Macau, bath houses in Tokyo, casinos in Las Vegas and Monte Carol, and, since his guides in each city were the local correspondents for the Sunday Times of London, all the bars where reporters and writers gathered to drink in those days.

Much of what Mr. Fleming recorded has, sometimes sadly and sometimes gladly, long since disappeared, as in this example: "Bahrain is, without question, the scruffiest international airport in the world. The washing facilities would not be tolerated in a prison, and the slow fans in the ceilings of the bedraggled hutments hardly stirred the flies. This is the East one is glad to get through quickly."

Other comments show that the East has not changed that much, as in this comment as his plane flies over Turkey: "From now on, we shall be in the lands of baksheesh, squeeze and graft, which rule from the smallest coolie to the Mr. Bigs in government."

And tucked into the first chapter there is this: "...then down over the rice fields of Burma to the heavenly green pastures of Thailand, spread out among wandering rivers and arrow-straight canals like some enchanted garden. This was the first place of really startling beauty I had so far seen, and the temperature of ninety-two degrees in the shade on the tarmac did nothing to spoil the impact of the country where I would advise other travelers to have their first view of the true Orient. A minute air hostess, smiling the first true smile, as opposed to an air hostess smile, since London, told us to "forrow me."

"In spite of the mosquitoes as large as Messershmitts and the wringing humidity, everyone seems to agree that Bangkok is a dream city, and I blamed myself for hurrying on to Hong Kong. In only one hour, one still got the impression of the topsy-turvy, childlike quality of the country, and an old Siamese hand, a chance acquaintance, summed it up with a recent cutting from a Bangkok newspaper."

Mr. Fleming then goes on to recount the now famous quote in which the Bangkok Police chief encouraged tourists to ask policemen for directions to reputable brothels, so as to avoid victimization by streetwalkers.

Thus an hour is spent in Bangkok in 1959, with just enough time to notice heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and the way women smile. Just one hour in this particular "thrilling city." That the police were willing to guide strangers to prostitutes may have been what made the ageing Mr. Fleming describe Bangkok as a "dream city," but I prefer to think that it was something more subtle, and something which even the casual visitor could absorb in a single hour spent in the airport. Alas, Babylon.

Settings Without Plots
By Bill Slocum
If you love Ian Fleming's James Bond novels for more than being the launching pads of the movies, you may well feel as I do that Fleming was a decent spinner of yarns and a sensational describer of settings. "Thrilling Cities," published in the United States in 1963, is a collection of Sunday newspaper articles in which Fleming wrote about various cities he visited, cities that might well have been settings for Bond adventures.

In this book, in fact, one is. "007 In New York" is a brief story included in this book's New York chapter that features Bond paying a visit to Central Park, but it is not clear whether Fleming wrote it to be canon or a lark. It's easily the lamest Bond story by Fleming, worse even than "Property Of A Lady," and serves only as an alternate means for describing New York.

"007 In New York" is also the weakest part of what is otherwise a very sturdy collection of travel writing. Yes, Fleming made these trips over 45 years ago. Those prices he quotes probably are missing a few zeroes at the end, and most of the establishments he names were shuttered long ago. But Fleming's ability to transport you not only remains in ample evidence, it is now even more impressive as he moves you through space AND time, his appreciation for sensual delight balanced and buttressed by an ever-caustic wit.

Viewing Hong Kong: "The streets of Hong Kong are evidence that neon lighting need not be hideous, and the crowded Chinese ideograms in pale violet and pink and green with a plentiful use of white are entrancing not only for their colors but also because one does not know what drab messages or exhortations they spell out."

Sunbathers in Honolulu: "...these elderly ghouls looked even worse without their muumuus - huge, blue-veined, dimpled thighs, scrawny necks and sagging bosoms garlanded with leis, their broken-down, spavined spouses trailing behind carrying the coconut mats, the sun-tan oil, the bathrobes, and the Wall Street Journal."

Italian drivers: "The amount of noise he can make with his vehicle, particularly via the exhaust pipe, has come in some obscure way to represent a virility symbol, and for the police to pray silence is as vain as to tell Italians not to lend grandeur and emphasis with their hands to the simplest of conversations."

To say that Fleming had a jaundiced, borderline bigot's attitude about the people of the world is not to deny him his engaging tone or his occasional bulls-eyes. In Bond books, one sees this character peeking out in slow moments, like when Bond walks through a hotel lobby or goes fishing as a cover for his real work, discoursing on the uniqueness of wherever in the world Bond is. For many Fleming aficionados, this is what makes Bond books special, even more than the silly names of the heroines or the bizarre plots Bond must foil.

Here, for the only real time, Fleming foregoes the plots and just bathes us in atmosphere, perhaps not a 100% accurate representation of the world as it is now or was then, but the world we imagine ourselves in when reading a Fleming Bond. It's a potent martini of a trip, neither shaken nor stirred, exactly, but very, very neat.

If you like the Bond books
By George Sheridan
Just remember that you're dealing with Ian Fleming, and it's therefore going to be racist and shot through with sexism and class bigotry on top of that. If you like the Bond books (and I do, very much--I just have to bear in mind when they were written), you know that going in.

However, it's not written as stylishly or as well as the Bond books. It's an unhealthy middle-aged Englishman on a whirlwind tour of a few continents bitching about the weird, shiftless, untrustworthy natives.

For Fleming completists only.

Wisdom and Witness Bonhoeffer, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Wayne Whitson Floyd

At a time when much of the world was either enticed with or entrapped by fascism, Dietrich Bonhoeffer dared to live the morally responsible Christian life to a most expressive, and in his case, tragic end. His legacy has inspired many, and it demonstrates his life and works to be among the most important of the twentieth century.

Forged during his struggle against Nazism, Bonhoeffer's striking notions of “religionless Christianity” (i.e., costly grace, direct religious engagement with political forces, and his own martyrdom) still speak directly to the situations faced by the Christians—and Christianity—of today. His key insights, combined with Floyd’s meditations which address meaning and significance for today, are powerfully presented here in fifty key passages grouped into eight areas of Bonhoeffer's concern: church, world, discipleship, politics, love, Christ, creation, and the future.

Review
“Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the one German theologian who will lead us into the third millennium.” -- Dorothee Soelle

“Some words Gorky used about Tolstoy come into my mind: ‘Look what a wonderful man is living on this earth!’” -- Malcolm Muggeridge

From the Publisher
From the Preface:

The life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer continue to inspire and provoke, comfort and challenge, nurture and unsettle his readers, now into the twenty-first century. This brief book is offered to introduce you to the wisdom and witness of this remarkable human being.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a university professor with a doctorate in theology, a Lutheran pastor, a participant in the early ecumenical movement, a prolific writer, a central figure in the Protestant church struggle against Nazism. His participation in the plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler led to his arrest, imprisonment, and eventual death by hanging at Flossenburg concentration camp on April 9, 1945, at the age of 39.

In this volume I have chosen brief excerpts from Bonhoeffer’s writings—books, articles, letters, poems, lectures, and sermons—that reflect the wide range of his work and the depth of the theological themes that absorbed him. The excerpts, printed on left-hand pages, provide the inspiration for short meditations on each text. In my reflections I have attempted to provide clues to what each brief text is about, its context, and most importantly its enduring witness for Bonhoeffer’s contemporary readers.

Eight themes provide the focus for these reflections. The first is Church, a reflection of Bonhoeffer’s strong conviction about the social nature of everything about the Christian faith. The second is World, for this is where the church is located, and Bonhoeffer took Jesus’ prayer for God’s reign to come “on earth as it is in heaven” quite seriously. The third is the theme of Discipleship, following Christ, and the ways in which our faith and action in the world are intertwined. The fourth is Politics, for in Bonhoeffer’s day, as in our own, the most difficult sorts of challenges for our discipleship come when the church tries to live out its faith in a world that is decidedly political. Fifth is the theme of Creation, including meditations on the importance of the ways that we understand ourselves as creatures of God. The sixth is Christ, who has been the hidden center of all that has preceded this section. The seventh is Love, which Bonhoeffer saw to be at the heart of Jesus’ life and words and work. And we conclude with a section on the Future—Bonhoeffer’s, our own, and God’s.

I hope you will encounter here matters to think and pray about, to argue with friends and family about, thoughts that will sometimes keep you awake at night and sometimes help you to sleep more peacefully. Perhaps they will help you look at your own faith differently. The success of any short book like this is measured by whether it makes you want to search out more of Bonhoeffer’s wisdom from his own writings and to learn more about his witness to God’s grace in a world torn by human folly.

About the Author
Wayne Whitson Floyd is Visiting Professor of Theology and Director of the Bonhoeffer Center, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. He is General Editor of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, English Edition, and Canon Theologian at Cathedral Church of St. Stephen, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Floyd and Bonhoeffer-great combination
By Dr. John Laughlin
This very readable book of 125 pages is an enjoyable introduction to one of our great saints and christian guides. The works of Lutheran theologian and ethicist Dietrich Bonhoeffer are organized into 50 key passages grouped in eight areas of Bonhoeffer's concerns: church, world, discipleship, politics, love, Christ, creation, and the future.

Each full-page quote is expanded upon by Bonhoeffer scholar Wayne Whitson Floyd who explores the context and circumstances of Bonhoeffer's words as well as their meaning and significance for us today. The text is accompanied by photos of the author.

Bonhoeffer's luminous insights will challenge and clarify what it means to follow Christ, to be called a disciple, to understand the role of the church in politics, and to explore the impact on society of "religionless Christianity." His writings represent the very best of theology in times of terrorism and thus speak freshly and directly to our terror-ridden world.

Allow this introduction to lead you to further study his works or those about him.

This February marks the 100th anniversary of Bonhoeffer's birth and April 8, 2006 marks the 60th anniversary of his death when he was executed by the Nazi's at Flossenburg Concentration Campless than a month before the end of the WW II .
