Amazon.com Review
Something odd, if predictable, became of screenwriter William Goldman after he wrote the touchstone tell-all book on filmmaking, Adventures in the Screen Trade (1983), he became a Hollywood leper. Goldman opens his long-awaited sequel by writing about his years of exile before he found himself--again--as a valuable writer in Hollywood.

Fans of the two-time Oscar-winning writer (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men) have anxiously waited for this follow-up since his career serpentined into a variety of big hits and critical bombs in the '80s and '90s. Here Goldman scoops on The Princess Bride (his own favorite), Misery, Maverick, Absolute Power, and others. Goldman's conversational style makes him easy to read for the film novice but meaty enough for the detail-oriented pro. His tendency to ramble into other subjects may be maddening (he suddenly switches from being on set with Eastwood to anecdotes about Newman and Garbo), but we can excuse him because of one fact alone: he is so darn entertaining.

Like most sequels, Which Lie follows the structure of the original. Both Goldman books have three parts: stories about his movies, a deconstruction of Hollywood (here the focus is on great movie scenes), and a workshop for screenwriters. (The paperback version of the first book also comes with his full-length screenplay of Butch; his collected works are also worth checking out). This final segment is another gift--a toolbox--for the aspiring screenwriter. Goldman takes newspaper clippings and other ideas and asks the reader to diagnose their cinematic possibilities. Goldman also gives us a new screenplay he's written (The Big A), which is analyzed--with brutal honesty--by other top writers. With its juicy facts and valuable sidebars on what makes good screenwriting, this is another entertaining must-read from the man who coined what has to be the most-quoted adage about movie-business success: "Nobody knows anything." --Doug Thomas

From Publishers Weekly
Two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter Goldman follows up his irreverent, gossipy and indispensable screenwriting bible, Adventures in the Screen Trade (1983), with this equally wise, tart and very funny account of the filmmaking process. He begins with the surprising admission that he was a "leper" in Hollywood between 1980 and 1985: after Magic (1978), he was unable to get any screenplays produced until The Princess Bride (1987). (Moviegoers' loss was readers' gain: during those years he wrote six novels.) Wildly opinionated ("Vertigo--for me, the most overrated movie of all time") but astute, Goldman is a 35-year industry veteran with lots of tales and a knack for spinning them. He knows how to captivate his audience, peppering his philosophical advice with star-studded anecdotes. Whether he's detailing why virtually every leading actor turned down the lead in Misery before James Caan offered to be drug-tested to get the part, or how Michael Douglas was the perfect producer but the wrong actor for The Ghost and the Darkness, Goldman offers keen observations in a chatty style. In the last section of the book, he gamely offers readers a rough first draft of an original screenplay. Even more bravely, he includes instructive, intuitive and sometimes scathing critiques by fellow screenwriters, including Peter and Bobby Farrelly (There's Something About Mary), Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise) and John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck). Movie buffs of all stripes, even those with no interest in writing for the screen, will enjoy this sublimely entertaining adventure. (Mar.)

From School Library Journal
YA-In this sequel to Adventures in the Screen Trade (Warner, 1989), Goldman instructs his audience in the art and industry of screenwriting and filmmaking, while regaling them with stories from his career. From The Memoirs of an Invisible Man to Absolute Power, this master storyteller explains his role and his thought processes for each film, at the same time delivering an exposition on how stories are written and films are made. Sprinkled throughout is his advice for future screenwriters. In the second section, he analyzes classic film sequences, setting each scene, quoting excerpts from the screenplays, and then explaining what made them great. Finally, the author offers story ideas and examines their potential for the big screen. Students of films will find this book entertaining and informative.

How to get the toys over the mountain
By Mike Stone
William Goldman's follow-up to "Adventures in the Screen Trade" follows much the same form as that book. It's intended for an audience of prospective Hollywood screenwriters, but can be equally enjoyed by those interested in frank Hollywood gossip and tales from an insider. Goldman is a perfect tour guide across this terrain, for he loves to teach from his experiences, and is an entertaining and economical writer. Most of this book feels like a private chat with a friendly old uncle who's lead an exciting and adventure filled life.
Goldman starts by revisiting a successful section from his earlier memoir: anecdotes from his experiences writing his most recent work. Tales of adapting his own "The Princess Bride", his love for the material and for Andre the Giant; the good intentioned but eventual failures of "The Year of the Comet" and "The Ghost and the Darkness" (the latter is a good example of how the material can get away from the writer once an egotistical star is on board, in this case Michael Douglas); and how he went about adapting "Misery" and "Absolute Power". This last example was my favourite, for even though the book it's based on was pulp, and movie barely registered, Goldman uses it as a fine example on the problems of adapting, and how you need to be ruthless just to make the thing work. He takes you through his process step-by-step, and the parts where he's racking his brain on how to make the sucker work are tangible in their frustration. Also, there were some nifty Clint Eastwood moments that make you respect the Man with No Name even more.
The second section takes a look at several of Goldman's favourite film scenes (from a screenwriter's point of view), and proposes to analyze why they worked. While his passion for these moments is palpable, Goldman skimps on the analysis. Why was the zipper scene in "There's Something About Mary" so effective? Why does the chess scene in "The Seventh Seal" resonant still? He does a fine job, though, finding the importance of the cliff scene from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". But then he should know that one inside out, because he wrote it (Warning: if you have never seen or do not at all appreciate "Butch and Sundance", I'd stay away from this book; Goldman has enthusiastic affection for his first big hit, and returns to it often for examples; I myself love the movie and was glad to read more about it). The best part of this section is his attempt to wrestle credit for the crop-duster scene in "North by Northwest" from Alfred Hitchcock, and give it to the screenwriter, Ernest Lehman. I was convinced.
The third section offers the reader a chance to be screenwriter. Goldman presents several newspaper clippings as examples of possible source material for an original screenplay. He then takes us through the process of molding and shaping the materiel to the demands of the screen. It's pedantic Goldman at his best.
In the final section, Goldman presents an original screenplay he's written to various professional screenwriters, to show the function of a "script doctor" (Goldman's latest and most notorious Hollywood incarnation). The screenplay he's written, a tired detective adventure called "The Big A", is still in process, and it's a treat reading Goldman thinking out loud. He doesn't know where to go with the story at some points, and presents the reader with various possibilities. He's unsure about a scene he's just written, and admits to its inadequacies. He's having problems with character, and admits to that too.
But Goldman is not nearly as hard on himself as those he's solicited for help are. This was my favourite section of the book. On the one hand, the submissions he's received are biting, witty, and malicious in the most entertaining of ways. On the other hand, they full of a variety of great ideas, all of which would turn "The Big A" into a bona fide movie. Tony Gilroy (who wrote "The Devil's Advocate") is particularly effective on both of these fronts; his writing is lovable curmudgeonry at its best.
If Goldman ever decides to finish off this trilogy, I'll be right there waiting. Whether in narrative prose or memoir form, his writing is easily digestible, fun, and most importantly, informative. He wears his passions on his sleeve, and invites the reader to do the same. I was right there with him the whole time, lapping up his nuggets of wisdom. I guess the best praise I have is that everytime I finish a Goldman book, I get the itch to go write a screenplay myself. And feel perfectly equipped to do so.

Too much Butch, but still a fun read
By Cliff Rives
I'm a huge fan of Goldman's books and most of his screenplays, and the original Adventures in the Screen Trade still stands as the definitive how-Hollywood-works primer. It's great to have him deconstructing the industry once again, praising some unlikely subjects--who would think the 67-year old author of Marathon Man would have picked the Farrelly brothers' There's Something About Mary as 1998's best film?--and attacking even more unlikely subjects--would you expect the screenwriter of A Bridge Too Far to loathe Saving Private Ryan? Goldman does, and how.) I have two key problems with Which Lie Did I Tell, however. One is, many Goldman fans will have seen a lot of this text before. Much of this material has appeared in Premiere Magazine over the years, as well as in collections of Goldman's screenplays. Long-time Goldman enthusiasts, then, might be a bit miffed about buying recycled material. My other misgiving is Goldman's tendency to rely too much on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when he's trying to get a point across. The original Adventures, remember, included the complete Butch screenplay and a lot of background material about the real-life duo and the making of the film. So it's disconcerting to see scene after scene from Butch used in the new book, along with many of the same anecdotes Goldman told us the first time around. On the other hand, if you're going to use a single film for a lot of your examples of screenwriting, you could do a lot worse than an Oscar-winning Western classic. So, if you read (and liked) Adventures in the Screen Trade and haven't read Goldman's movie pieces elsewhere, give this review an extra star and give Which Lie Did I Tell a try. If you know every line of Adventures and sought out everything Goldman has written since then, you might consider waiting for the paperback. (Hey, he's rich and his children are grown, no one's going to starve if you pass on the hardcover.)

Like most sequels, this ain't quite as good BUT..
By Scott Bailey
...it still is very much worth a read. (Goldman has such an easy going, conversational writing style, you can polish off this book a few hours.) One of my favorite all time books is his first Adventures in the Screen Trade, which was the first book that I ever read about how Hollywood really works. (His analysis of The Great Santini is classic.) This book is highly entertaining, but it does not have the sheen of originality that the first book had. And I was really getting a bit tired reading about Butch Cassidy (he even acknowledges that the book's reader might hurl the thing across the room, due to his constant references of that film.) I would much rather have read his thoughts on The Last Action Hero. What the hell was going through the movie makers minds on that one? But overall, this book was lots of fun, especially his analysis of There's Something About Mary and Fargo. And it was fun reading about why that Chevy Chase Invisible Man movie was so horrendous. So, if you like movies, go ahead and read this, but make sure you read the first Adventures in the Screen Trade first.

Least enjoyable of the series
By Jane B. Phelps
The only saving grace for this story is that it's romantic. The hero is spoiled and immature; the heroine is wispy-washy and the circumstances are ludicrous.
Colin is ruined by claims that he was cheating at cards but instead of accepting help to clear his name he spitefully acts like spoiled adolescent and chooses to try to do it himself. Instead of proving he was framed he makes matters by becoming an alcoholic and losing at gambling until he's done in. Then he wallows in self-pity and eventually loses his temper with dire results Not a likable character! Brenna is sweet one scene and a fiery miss the next. She reasons for staying in England are too thin to be believable. The story hops from one disaster to the next and just when it appears to be resolving itself Brenna is trapped in an open tower in a driving rainstorm by a raging fire on the wooden stairs, but the rain can't put the fire out.

I was very impressed by the book - an excellent introduction to adaptation studies for undergraduate students. (Professor Deborah Wynne, University of Chester, UK)

A very useful and original introduction to the practice and theory of adaptation. I personally found the introduction and concluding exercises to be really inspiring when it came to the teaching of adaptations of Shakespeare. (Matthew Woodcock, University of East Anglia, UK)

This will be an excellent resource for a number of students who are looking at adaptation in illustration. (Jason Hirons, Plymouth College of Art, UK)

Diane von Furstenberg: A Life Unwrapped, by Gioia Diliberto

A sweeping biography of one of the most influential and controversial legends of late twentieth-century fashion, an iconic designer whose colorful creations, including the “wrap dress,” captured the modern feminist spirit.

The daughter of a Holocaust survivor and wife of an Austrian nobleman, Diane von Furstenberg burst onto New York’s fashion scene in 1969, and within a few years became an international sensation with her colorful wrap dress in printed jersey. Embraced by millions of American women of all ages, sizes, and shapes, the dress became a cult object and symbol of women’s liberation, tied inexorably to the image of youth, independence, and sex Diane herself projected.

In this masterful biography, Gioia Diliberto brings Diane’s extraordinary life into focus, from her post-World-War-II childhood in Belgium, through her rise to the top of the fashion world during the decadent seventies and glamorous go-go eighties, to her humiliating failures both professional and personal, and her remarkable comeback in the nineties. Like Coco Chanel, Diane has always been her own best advertisement. Morphing from a frizzy brunette outsider in a sea of sleek blondes to a stunning pop cultural icon, she embodied the brand she created—“the DVF woman,” a model of self-sufficiency, sensuality, and confidence.

Diliberto’s captivating, balanced portrait, based on scores of interviews with Diane’s family, friends, lovers, employees, and the designer herself, explores von Furstenberg’s relationships with her husbands and lovers, and illuminates fashion’s evolution from rare luxury to marketing monster and the development of a uniquely American style. Lively and insightful, the book also explores the larger world of the nation’s elite, where fashion, culture, society, politics, and Hollywood collide. Diane von Furstenberg is a modern fable of self-invention, fame, wealth, failure, and success that mirrors late-twentieth century America itself.

From the Back Cover

A sweeping biography of one of the most influential and controversial legends of  New York fashion—the iconic designer whose creations captured the modern feminist spirit

In 1969, when women's liberation and equal rights were on everyone's lips, twenty-two-year-old Diane von Furstenberg set out to have a career of her own. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Diane grew up a frizzy-haired, gap-toothed outsider in Brussels. Improbably, she became the wife of Austrian nobleman Egon von Furstenberg, moved to New York City, and quickly made herself a fixture of an outrageous fashion scene. Pregnant and lugging a suitcase of samples to department stores, Diane started a dress business with three styles—and in 1973, stormed onto the national stage with the invention of the wrap dress.

Embraced for its flattering style by millions of American women of all ages, sizes, and shapes, the dress became a cult object, tied inexorably to the image Diane projected of youth, independence, and sex—"the DVF woman," a model of self-sufficiency, sensuality, and confidence. In this masterful biography, Gioia Diliberto delves beyond that woman to bring Diane's extraordinary life into focus, from her post–World War II childhood in Belgium, through her rise to the top of the fashion world during the decadent seventies and glamorous go-go eighties, to her humiliating failures both professional and personal, and her remarkable comeback in the nineties.

Drawing on interviews with Diane's family, friends, lovers, employees, and the designer herself, Diliberto creates a captivating portrait of von Furstenberg through her relationships and role in the development of a uniquely American style. As befits the story of a clothing designer who became a stunning pop cultural icon, the book also explores fashion's evolution from rare luxury to marketing monster, and the larger world of the nation's elite—an exclusive club where fashion, culture, society, politics, and Hollywood collide. Lively and insightful, Diane von Furstenberg is a modern fable of self-invention, fame, wealth, failure, and success, pulled together with the style and assuredness of a DVF dress.

Secrets and Smarts
By BleacherSeat445
This book surprised me by penetrating the bubble around the pop-culture icon DVF and producing page after page of fresh news and thoughtful insights. It’s remarkable how many secrets can be contained in a life lived very much in the public eye—but Diliberto manages to uncover many, ranging among fashion, business, Hollywood and, of course, sex. A weekend hopping between the beds of Warren Beatty and Ryan O’Neal? Apparently. The book goes far beyond gossip, though, in taking a useful look at the currents flowing over America in the last decades of the twentieth century, particularly those involving the role of women. Diliberto clearly admires von Furstenberg, but that hasn’t prevented her from asking the hard questions and raising the tough issues. Like all good biographies, this is as much a book about a place and time as it is about an individual. A terrific piece of work.

Sexy, Fun and Very Well Done
By Readerly
I knew nothing about Diane von Furstenberg and nothing about the fashion industry before reading this book. I picked it up because her life story sounded like an interesting one, and because I've enjoyed Gioia Diliberto's other books. I was definitely not disappointed. This book has everything--a fascinating protagonist. an inspiring journey, sex, glamour, celebrity.... This is a serious work of biography, well written and meticulously researched. Best of all it offers a big fat juicy slice of American life in the 20th century. Highly recommended!

By the reader
This is a wonderful biography by a terrific writer. There is in depth research, hard questions asked (and answered), juicy details about Von Furstenburg's childhood and private life and good tidbits about New York of the 1970s and 1980s. Anyone who cares about powerful women, women in fashion, should read it.

Text and image are used together in an increasingly flexible fashion and many disciplines and areas of study are now attempting to understand how these combinations work. This introductory textbook explores and analyses the various approaches to multimodality and offers a broad, interdisciplinary survey of all aspects of the text-image relation. It leads students into detailed discussion concerning a number of approaches that are used. It also brings out their strengths and weaknesses using illustrative example analyses and raises explicit research questions to reinforce learning.

Throughout the book, John Bateman looks at a wide range of perspectives: socio-semiotics, visual communication, psycholinguistic approaches to discourse, rhetorical approaches to advertising and visual persuasion, and cognitive metaphor theory. Applications of the styles of analyses presented are discussed for a variety of materials, including advertisements, picture books, comics and textbooks.

Review

'Anyone with an interest in the semiotic properties of texts and images, and the multiplication of meaning that may result from their combination, will be utterly absorbed by this gem of a book. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines and using many compelling examples, Bateman manages to convey complex ideas in a highly engaging and accessible style. Text and Image will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars in several academic disciplines, as well as offering important insights to practitioners in all areas of cultural production where words and images are used.' - Dr. Elisabeth El Refaie, Cardiff University, UK

'2D word and image texts are undoubtedly central to theorizing multimodal discourse. Ideologically unaligned, John Bateman’s only concern is the discovery of patterned, and therefore teachable, meaning-making mechanisms in such texts. Critically discussing, evaluating, and synthesizing sources from whatever models and frameworks he deems pertinent, the author explores a wide range of genres, including picturebooks, advertisements, and comics. At long last we have it: an excellent textbook that sketches the contours of multimodality as a serious scholarly discipline.' - Charles Forceville, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

'This book offers a very detailed description of the specific properties of various visual artefacts, and a very detailed introduction to and discussion of different approaches to the investigation of those visual artefacts...What is more, the book presents important innovative frameworks from different perspectives, which is of significant value for scholars, teachers and students who are interested in multimodality, media and design studies.' - Suijun Wen, Guangdong University of Finance

About the Author

John A. Bateman is Professor of Appliable English Linguistics at the University of Bremen, Germany and has been teaching courses with significant multimodal components for many years. His publications include Multimodality and Genre (2008), and Multimodal Film Analysis (with Karl-Heinrich Schmidt, 2012)

Reflecting the rapid progress in cleanup technology since the previous edition, this revised and expanded third edition of The Basics of Oil Spill Cleanup covers current cleanup techniques, how oil spills are measured and detected, and the properties of the oil and its long-term fate in the environment. It also deals with why, how often, and where oil spills occur as well as the chemical composition and physical properties of various oil types.

The chapters describe surface and remote sensing technologies used to detect and track oil slicks, and methods to contain oil on water (booms and ancillary equipment) and recover oil from the water surface (skimmers, sorbents, and manual recovery). The author discusses the use of pumps, in-situ burning, and chemical agents, such as dispersants, for oil removal. He also addresses oil-contaminated shorelines and the effects and behavior of oil on different ecosystems and the various organisms within them. Written for the general public as well as those directly involved with oil spill cleanup, this edition provides broad, up-to-date knowledge of the cleanup and control of spills.

From Booklist
Author Mikics stakes a claim in what he acknowledges is a crowded field with this collection of literary terms that are "crucial for students to know." Entries cover forms, genres, movements, periods, and theories, among other topics. Especially useful are the bibliographical examples and suggestions contained in most entries. For instance, Gothic refers to examples ranging from Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto to the movie Psycho and the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in addition to several important critical works on the genre. Emphasis is on the European tradition. Quinn, Mary Ellen

"A very learned and refreshingly lively handbook."—Ian Balfour, York University
(Ian Balfour)

"Impressive in its range, lucidity, and intellectual rigor. . . . The volume moves deftly through the centuries and across boundaries of nation and genre. I have no doubt that students will benefit from the book, which is at once a useful work of reference and an invitation to browse."—Michael Levenson, University of Virginia
(Michael Levenson)

"Mikics's Handbook contextualizes historically even as it conceptualizes—that is, in glossing a particular term, the author provides an historical account of its uses.  I intend to recommend it noisily."—John Hollander
(John Hollander)

‘If you have forgotten the form of a sestina or a ghazal, or can’t quite remember what vorticism was supposed to be, this book will do the trick: a confidently historicizing, impressively synoptic compilation of the major ideas and forms over the last 2,500 years or so of literature and criticism.’---The Guardian (The Guardian 2007-08-18)

Where once I was blind, now I can see!
By Chris Miller
After reading this book cover to cover, I felt confident that I could both grasp and program the essentials of what went into a game from the DOS-era. Though familar with C, it took two months to read the volumous book, but it really is a delight to read. The code is commented superbly (after a while, you almost don't even have to read the code to understand it) and I would recommend running the conveniently provided demo *.exe files for each example to get a better idea of how it works after reading each one.
The first few chapters on I/O and 2D and the later chapters on AI and interrupt handling provide more than enough to begin programming your own games using C in DOS (DJGPP compiler is great for this - the web of course provides the rest).
The chapters on 3d ray-castering, etc, provide a good understanding for how Wolf-3D might have worked, but falls slightly short of Doom. This is not such a bad thing if you are new (as I was) to games programming. Less forgiving though, was the disappointment to find that after reading the whole book, the final chapter does not deliver on coding a 3D game with monsters, etc. I can understand that after the effort of all the previous chapters with their carefully-coded examples, the author may have been keen to finish the book, but it was like a finishing a game without a "Hey you just won now watch this ultra-cool sequence" ending.
That aside though, this is an exceptional book for beginners to game programming. After reading it, you will be able to look at any game and start to see the cogs ticking behind the scenes. If nothing else, it will give you an appreciation of the programming effort put into games. For those seeking instant gratification with Windows/directX games, this book can be skipped. But for those with an interest in learning games programming, I couldn't think of a better place to start.

Superb.
By A Customer
Although dated now, this book is still one of the books I love the most in my collection.
Lamothe starts in each chapter with a new topic and gradually solves the problems as they arise with summaries and other notes. A basic knowledge of C and how to work computers obviously will stand you in good stead but even an amature, with determination can pick this book up and really learn from it. Lamothe tends to spring little details on you at the last moment so be sure to read every chapter at least twice.
As I said it is a bit old but helps you understand the basics of the VGA card mode 13h, yadda yadda.... Graphics and all other games aspects are covered, even 3D has a little coverage.
The Video Games Industry is an impossible thing to follow as advances are every where and a new book is an old book overnight but Lamothe has made a brilliant stab at this.... and succeeded.

Great 2D, not-so-great 3D
By Blessed
This book is a great introduction to 2D programming and the basics of the video card (but only in mode 13h, 320X200). It covered numerous 2D topics such as scaling, rotating, translating, scrolling techniques, etc. But, I thought this book would go further into 3D game programming since that is more present in current games. He talkes about 3D programming in the 6th chapter and then never gets back to it. I didn't learn how to make a ray casting engine from this single chapter. It showed some mathematical functions explained some theorys, showed me the source code for a real, functioning ray caster and then got right back into 2D special effects! I didn't learn any 3D game programming techniques from this book and it left me searching for another book that focuses on 3D.
If you are a beginner and know nothing about 2D or 3D graphics, buy this book. But, if you know all you want to know about 2D graphics, go looking for another book that explains 3D graphics in depth like one of the OpenGL or Direct3D books.
