those looking for supernatural intriguing short stories from a far off distant land won't be disappointed as myself was from rea

I've only seen two reviews for this book with both of them having a rating of 3 stars, but as far as I'm concerned, this work of literature as well as the vendor deserve a 5 star, while the content of the book itself is a matter of personal taste, those looking for supernatural intriguing short stories from a far off distant land won't be disappointed as myself was from reading these stories that have their own merit and have shown me a different kind of supernatural literature from a culture that is non western, learning about the different types of supernatural beings in china was very pleasing for a supernatural enthusiast like myself, I only regret there are not that many works of literature like this one being translated into English, yet this work does not disappoint, the books themselves (3 volumes) are very good quality, being hardcover and seem sturdily made for repetitive reading by many for years to come, which is nice for someone like me who rereads beloved works as this one is for me recently, so physically the books are great and durable, the vendor was also great, no errors in the process, shipping was very fast, faster than anticipated and everything accounted for, therefore I would surely recommend and buy from this vendor in the future if the occasion arises.

Chinese ghost stories for adults.

Having greatly enjoyed reading the two great Chinese mythical epics "Journey to the West" and "Creation of the Gods" previously, I turned next to Pu Songling's massive collection of supernatural tales. Pu Songling, who lived in the early Qing Dynasty period (17th century C.E.), was fascinated by stories involving ghosts, ghouls, goblins, demons and fairies. His engrossing collection of ancient Chinese tales, like those in the Japanese "Kwaidan" tradition, has spawned numerous TV and film adaptations over the years. The well-known Hong Kong movie, "A Chinese Ghost Story", was adapted and expanded from one of the tales found in this collection, as were "A Touch of Zen" and "The Painted Skin". This three-volume hardcover translation of Pu's work is a brisk read - I finished the lot (approximately 800 pages) in less than a week. Most of the tales are very short, a few pages at most, and not really scary or anything like that. There are hundreds of them here, and they do become repetitve after a while. But what surprises me most about Pu's work is the amount of SEX involved. No, there isn't any explicit description of the sexual act itself, but there are heaving bosoms and bodice rippings to be found between the covers. An inordinate amount of the stories involve illicit sex of some sort, as well as a tale or two involving magical cures for impotency or for enlarging one's equipment. The whole gamut of marital and extramarital sexual activities can be found within this collection: heterosexual, homosexual, consensual, non-consensual, incestual, bestial, sado-masochism, castration and even necrophilia (if memory serves). One tale involves a philandering cad who fathered illegitmate children with prostitutes (a son and a daughter) who then had sex with them years later (on separate occasions, thank goodness - how much more shocking would it be if it involved a threesome!) without knowing they were his children! Given the fact that Pu was writing in 17th century China, this was certainly an eye-opener. The ancient Chinese weren't always as uptight about sex as I had always thought! Pu's comments at the end of each tale also provides some interesting insight into the Chinese psyche of that time - some of which continues to be true to this very day. All in all, a fascinating collection to read, but not especially entertaining. And definitely not for children. The fabulous "Journey to the West", written a century or two before Pu's time, is a far more fascinating book to read.

...even though I gave the book 3 stars as well. Pu Songling's "Strange Tales..." is indeed a fascinating read. At first, I was put off by the abrupt endings of most of the stories (some of which constitute one paragraph in total). I mean, shouldn't a story resolve itself?

But then I realized the genius of Mr. Pu. This man is not attempting to create some sort of "Canterbury Tales", but rather, is merely travelling the countryside, collecting the folk tales of the people of each stop. In many cases, you can actually see that the villagers believed the tale they were telling, and Mr. Pu wanted to include them all to give a flavor of the country he lived in and the time he lived in. I loved the stories and found them quite fascinating inded!

So why the 3 star rating? Well, unfortunately, a work of this magnitude deserves a translation to bring it out, but here "Strange Tales..." fails to satisfy. Misprints are rife, and sometimes the sense of a statement simply cannot be made out (the translators take great pains in defining some of the scholarly positions of the time, such as juren and xiucai, which are defined multiple times; one wonders if maybe some of this effort would have been better spent in proofreading!). Names appear on pages which simply don't appear in the tale, and sometimes a name is spelt multiply different ways on the same page! Chinese names are already difficult to the average reader, and this lack of care only complicates matters further. For this reason, I give a two star deduction.

That being said, I enjoyed the work immensely. No, it's not fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, but I think that readers who are looking for this book won't be disappointed in the content.

Smart and funny

I laughed out loud several times during this story. It has a dark humor to it, nicely written in a very easy and droll way. As the narrator told his story, I felt his frustration, pain and even hatred about his wife and her infernal little anecdote, and I really shouldn't have been amused by this man's suffering. But I was.

This couple fight in a way only the long-married and long-suffering can do, with a kind of passive aggression that builds up anger and resentment on both sides. And as this husband approaches his breaking point, the reader is sitting there in a ringside seat, waiting to see just who would have the final word. I was very interested in how, or even if, this man would succeed in shutting his wife up. The author kept me completely hooked to the very end, which was delivered with a cleverly ironic twist.

This Kindle Single is a good laugh, just funny and smartly written. It'll probably take about fifteen minutes of your time, but it's well worth it.

a chilling little fable about the dangers of marriage

If only they were still publishing the Alfred Hitchcock anthologies of scary short stories! Richard Babcock belongs besides the greats of that genre. You're deep into "My Wife's Story" before you realize the breezy, affable narrator is actually something of a psychopath. And in the finest Hitchcock tradition, he's the kind of psychopath you can relate to. You feel his pain from hearing his wife tell the same story so many times it drives him mad. There may be two sides to every story, but Babcock cleverly only gives us one -- the husband's -- right up until the very end, when the wife finally, and unexpectedly, gets her say.

Oh so good

Read this entire story while sitting at a bar drinking a Guinness. As I approached the end, I literally laughed out loud and the guy next to me, watching the Packers peel the skin off some unworthy opponent, asked me what was so funny. I told him the guy in the story is a nut, but I feel his pain.

Good story. Great subtle ending.

About the Author

Im Sik Cho is an assistant professor at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore, where she serves as the leader for urban studies research and teaching and principal investigator for many research projects related to urban space design and participatory planning for sustainable high-density environment.

Chye Kiang Heng is a professor, urban designer and planner. Currently, he is the dean of the School of Design and Environment at the National University of Singapore. He has published four books and numerous articles and book chapters. He is visiting professor at several leading Asian universities and serves on the editorial board of a number of international journals.

Zdravko Trivic is an assistant professor at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment (SDE), National University of Singapore (NUS). He also worked as a researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Cities (CSAC), SDE, NUS. His research and design work in the areas of urban design and health and space theories has been presented internationally. He has published several book chapters and conference and journal articles.

About the Author
ROBERT H. HAYES is the Philip Caldwell Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, at the Harvard Business School.

His latest book, Strategic Operations: Competing Through Capabilities (coauthored with Gary Pisano and David Upton ), was published in 1996.

GARY P. PISANO is the Harry E. Figgie, Jr. Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Since joining the Harvard faculty in 1988, he has taught both MBA and executive level courses on technology and operations management, operations strategy, competitive strategy, product development, the management of innovation, and health care.
Pisano is a widely published author with over 25 research papers published in such journals as Management Science, Administrative Science Quarterly, and the Harvard Business Review. He has also written case studies on such companies as BMW, ITT-Automotive, Intel, and Eli Lilly.

DAVID M. UPTON has been on the faculty of the Harvard Business School since 1989. He is currently course head for the required first-year MBA course in Technology and Operations Management and has taught second-year elective courses in Operations Strategy and Operations Improvement and Information Technology.

STEVEN C. WHEELWRIGHT is the Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration, Retired, at Harvard Business School.
Along with Harvard colleagues Bob Hayes and Kim Clark, Professor Wheelwright has also published the highly regarded book, Dynamic Manufacturing: Creating the Learning Organization (Free Press, 1988).

Slightly wordy, but a good introduction to Operations and strategy

This book was a required read for an Operations Management class I was taking. It is very well written, though my biggest complaint is that the 4 Harvard authors get a little too wordy at times and tend to make it a tougher read than it needs to be. The concepts are very well presented and provide an excellent introduction to operations management if you have never learned much about it. They spend quite a bit of time on the IT and internet-related industries, and their insight is valuable. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about operations and be able to communicate more effectively on the subject.

Great book for manufacturing strategy

If you are currently working in the manufacturing field, or intend to, this book provides some of the best academic research available. Of course, you have to be enough of a scholar-practitioner to be able to take the lessons from academia and apply them to the real world. If you are able to do that, you will find this book to be a real gem. If not, you may toss it aside as too much theory. I would strongly recommend this book for manufacturing executives, students seeking advanced degrees in engineering and manufacturing, and professors teaching courses in that area.

I use this book in a course I teach in manufacturing strategy at a major universities' engineering graduate program.

This book is a compendium of survey lectures presented at a conference on Riemannian Geometry sponsored by The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Waterloo, Canada) in August 1993. Attended by over 80 participants, the aim of the conference was to promote research activity in Riemannian geometry. A select group of internationally established researchers in the field were invited to discuss and present current developments in a selection of contemporary topics in Riemannian geometry. This volume contains four of the five survey lectures presented at the conference. 'Where the Heart Is' contains the stories of over 30 women (and a couple of home birth dads). It is divided into five chapters, headed: ‘Home Birth From the Start’, ‘Healing Birth’, ‘Facing the Unexpected’, ‘Birth and Death’, and ‘Maori Birth’. The end of each chapter gives a summary of the key ideas expressed in the stories that enabled the women to achieve the positive and empowering births that they did. Also included are a number of photographs, including two professionally produced photographic stories. The readers for whom the book is intended are: pregnant women (especially those who are pregnant with their first baby, or who had a previous traumatic birth experience), their partners and/or other birth support people, and any women contemplating pregnancy. Positive, powerful stories

This book is positive, uplifting and moving. I found it to be well ordered making it easy to read and move around, if certain topics interest you more than others. The stories are tender and honest but the commentary by the author helps to summarise and make clear the themes in each chapter. The chapter on birth and death and maori birth were my favourites. Recommend to any pregnant woman or anyone interested in learning more about the realities and experiences of home birth. Even if home birth is not your thing, this collection of birth stories holds many lessons and teachings for people planning to start a family.

Examining the relationships between domestic laws of different nation-states, and between domestic criminal law and international or transnational law, the chapters also look at the authority and jurisdiction of international criminal law itself, and its relationship to other dimensions of the international order.

About the Author

R A Duff is a tenured professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, and professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy, University of Stirling, Scotland.
His research focuses on the philosophy of criminal law, and he has published widely on penal theory, including; Philosophical Foundations of the Criminal Law (co-edited with Stuart Green, OUP 2011); Trials and Punishments (CUP, 1986), and Punishment, Communication, and Community (OUP, 2001); on the structure and principles of criminal liability with titles including Intention, Agency, and Criminal Liability (Blackwell, 1990), Criminal Attempts (OUP, 1996), and Answering for Crime (Hart, 2007); and on the criminal trial. His current projects include a book for the Criminalization project The Realm of the Criminal Law.

Lindsay Farmer works on the relationship between criminal law, legal theory and legal history, looking at how historical changes in the institutions and practices of the criminal law do and should shape normative accounts of criminal law. His book Criminal Law, Tradition and Legal Order (CUP, 1997) examines the development of Scots criminal law and its relation to national identity. He is currently working on a historical account of theories of criminalization. He has been professor of law at the University of Glasgow since 1999.

S.E. Marshall is a professor of philosophy at the University of Stirling. She co-edited the three-volume project The Trial on Trial with R.A. Duff, L. Farmer, and V. Tadros (Hart 2007) as well as the three titles of the Criminalization series. She serves on the Management Committee of the Philosophical Quarterly, and is President of the UK Association for Legal and Social Philosophy.

Massimo Renzo works primarily in legal theory and political philosophy. His main research interests are in the philosophical foundation of criminal law, international justice, state legitimacy, and political obligation. He is a lecturer at York Law School, and is on the editorial board of Criminal Law and Philosophy.

Victor Tadros works primarily on the philosophy of criminal law, criminal justice and punishment. He also has interests in general jurisprudence, and moral and political philosophy. He has two published books Criminal Responsibility (OUP, 2005) and The Ends of Harm (OUP, 2011), and he is also writing a book for the Criminalization series entitled Wrongs and Crimes. Prior to his appointment as professor of criminal law and legal theory at the University of Warwick, he held posts at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh.
