Unfriended, by Rachel Vail

In middle school, nothing is more important than friendship.

When Truly is invited to sit at the Popular Table with the group she has dreamed of joining, she can hardly believe her luck. Everyone seems so nice, so kind to one another. But all is not as it seems with her new friends, and soon she's caught in a maelstrom of lies, misunderstandings, accusations and counter-accusations, all happening very publicly in the relentless, hyperconnected social media world from which there is no escape.

Six eighth-graders, four girls and two boys, struggle to understand and process their fractured glimples into one another's lives as they find new ways to disconnect, but also to connect, in Rachel Vail's richest and most searching book.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—When Truly is invited to the popular table by her former best friend, Natasha, she is excited to finally get a chance at the "in" crowd. Unsure if she is really accepted by them, she worries about doing and saying the wrong thing. Popular Natasha is torn between being a good friend to Truly and being jealous of the attention that she gets. Meanwhile, Hazel, Truly's current best friend, who is decidedly unpopular and anti-popularity, is hurt and angry at being abandoned by her friend. She seeks revenge by hacking into all of Truly's online accounts. The addition of social media amplifies each snub, misunderstanding, and deliberate meanness. Although the characters' interactions may, at first glance seem melodramatic, it is a realistic portrayal of middle school life. Truly is depicted as a complex young adult, not a single-minded social climber, while Natasha's mean streak is the obvious product of questionable parenting. The other characters are multidimensional; they have struggles and worries, and are not the flat, stereotypical popular kids that are sometimes portrayed YA novels. As these young people navigate the already awkward world of middle school, the fact that accusations, rumors, and lies are made public for the world to see make adolescent mistakes much more grave. A solid choice that will ignite meaningful discussion.—Patricia Feriano, Our Lady of Mercy School, Potomac, MD

What I'd Tell My Middle-School Self
By Sarah Ross
I've loved Rachel Vail books since I was a teenager, and even now several years later I find her insights just as achingly true. The hilarious and hideous realities of middle school, of being a girl who wants to be good, clever, fun, and popular and who finds that sometimes those things aren't compatible, are all -- as usual -- perfectly rendered. Mostly I loved this because it takes how it *feels* to be a young woman seriously, and it looks at the great ways social media helps your life, and the many ways it makes it so much more complicated. Great gift for sisters, cousins, and those other girls in your life who you want to encourage to be the best, most compassionate version of themselves.

This smart, witty writer sure knows her middle schoolers
By stacy
This smart, witty writer sure knows her middle schoolers! As a mom of three, with one still in middle school, I HIGHLY recommend this book. Great conversation starter with realistic themes. Great way to bring up the hard issues without being too serious. A fun read for parents and kids!!

Great read about friendships and the dynamics of "mean girls"
By Kelli Nash
Unfriended was a great read. It really took me back, way back, to my own middle school years. That feeling of not fitting in, and so desperately wanting to, is something that's hard to forget.

So it was with great empathy that I understood Truly's situation. On a whim, one of the popular girls invites her to sit at their table for lunch. Truly turns her back on her best friend Hazel to join the "it" crowd. And Hazel doesn't really take the rejection well.

What follows is a story of friendship, both real and imagined, bullying, and redemption. I liked the way Vail resolved the conflict and felt that Unfriended accurately portrayed the friendship dynamics of middle school.

Unfriended was a fast read, and is not to be missed. One of my favorite lines from the book comes towards the end when Natasha says to her mother:

"'You make me hate myself, and then it's like, all I am is hate. All I have, all I can put out there into the world is hate.'" --- Unfriended, page 269

When I read that passage, I found myself tearing up. This is why girls can be so mean to each other. It all comes from their own damaged self-esteem, and often stems from their relationships with their mothers. It was a powerful realization, especially for a middle grade novel.

I really enjoyed Unfriended and would definitely recommend it.

So-so
By Amazon Customer
I bought it because I couldn't afford to spend $100 on the book, and it's been a wash. As a cost efficient replacement for the book, this CD can't be beat. For learning purposes, it's been okay.

It's more concise than the book (at least what I could tell from comparing the first chapter on each), which I believe has helped me to understand the subject matter a bit better (at least compared to my classmates so far). However, it doesn't cover everything from the book. There are several instances where the CD just directs you to the book to understand an issue. (This hasn't had much of an impact for me, however.) The number of problems is very helpful, because it gives you a chance to explore something you might not get.

The absolute worst aspect of this CD is the design of it. To start with, it's just ugly. The layout is confusing, with two different places where information can show up and no specific pattern as to what will appear in which place or why. Navigation is very simplistic, and it's very difficult to go back to reference a piece of information without having to wade through whole sections and all the problems. I ended up just taking notes as I went through the CD and using that for reference after the first week of class. There's also a very random and unexpected use of childish graphics that don't serve any purpose.

SO HELPFUL
By UAAstudent
My instructor went over the CD in class and I had bought a book w/out the CD and realized, after class, I really needed the CD. The book does have some things not on the CD but most of the book is quite hard to really comprehend. I got a bootleg copy of the CD then bought a Mac and could no longer use that CD. I thought they didn't make this for Mac! Thank you so much for posting pictures of the case showing system requirements. After being on the CD an hour or so, you get the hang of the layout and what not. After you understand it, it will be your most helpful tool if your not such a PHIL wiz.

Software Feels a Bit Old, But Effective
By Amazon User
I am using this software to accompany the textbook for a class. The software (running on a Mac with OS X 10.6) seems a bit old in the interface and outdated compared to newer programs you might be used to. But, it is a very effective product. The book to go with this CD is not the easiest textbook to understand. The CD provides all of the facts, as well as practice problems with instant feedback on your answers. I would recommend the CD if you are taking a class using the text by the same authors.

We Rode the Orphan Trains, by Andrea Warren

They were “throw away” kids, living in the streets or in orphanages and foster homes. Then Charles Loring Brace, a young minister working with the poor in New York City, started the Children’s Aid Society and devised a plan to give homeless children a chance to find families to call their own.

Thus began an extraordinary migration of American children. Between 1854 and 1929, an estimated 200,000 children, mostly from New York and other cities of the eastern United States, ventured forth to other states on a journey of hope.

Andrea Warren has shared the stories of some of these orphan train riders here, including those of Betty, who found a fairy tale life in a grand hotel; Nettie Evans and her twin, Nellie, who were rescued from their first abusive placement and taken in by a new, kindhearted family who gave them the love they had hoped for; brothers Howard and Fred, who remained close even though they were adopted into different families; and Edith, who longed to know the secrets of her past.

Listen to these and other child orphans as they share their memories of transition and adventure, disappointment and loneliness, but ultimately of the joy of belonging to their own new families.

From Publishers Weekly
Warren (Orphan Train Rider) here interviews eight orphan train riders concerning their childhood experiences during "the largest children's migration in history" between 1854 and 1929 as part of a "placing out" program run by the Children's Aid Society of New York City. The stories reflect the diversity of the train itself, from Nettie, who discusses how she and her identical twin, Nellie, escaped their first sadistic adoptive mother to find a loving home with an older couple, to Art Smith, whose daydreams of an actress mother were shattered when he discovered he was a baby "left in a basket in Gimbel's Department Store." Many of the profiles include well-chosen details that will tug at readers' heartstrings, such as Sister Justina, who celebrated the wrong birth date for 57 years, or little Ruth, who initially refused to take her arms off the dinner table after years of protecting her food from grabby, hungry orphans. Black-and-white photographs effectively highlight the stories. Though some of the accounts focus too much on adult discoveries, ultimately the anecdotes about these brave and lonely children will keep readers traveling on this train. Ages 9-12.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Warren's story of nine-year-old Lee Nailling in Orphan Train Rider (Houghton, 1996) opened a window onto a disturbing period of American history in which children were both victims and heroes. In this follow-up volume, she relates the personal histories of eight men and women-now senior citizens-who were orphaned or abandoned as children and later traveled across the country in trains to meet strangers who would become their new family members. An introductory chapter describes the appalling numbers of homeless children in 19th-century America's large eastern cities and explains how poverty and disease as well as high rates of alcohol and drug addiction contributed to a problem that continued into the 20th century. The personal histories, based on interviews that Warren conducted with her subjects, are rich and compelling and so full of dramatic twists and turns that they could have been conceived by Charles Dickens. Hunger, fear, and isolation are the most common recollections of the men and women who speak from these pages. Fortunately these stories all have happy endings, testimony to the resilience of children and the kindness of strangers. The author also includes information about early social activists such as Charles Loring Brace, who established New York City's Children's Aid Society in 1853. These remarkable stories have enormous human-interest appeal and will provoke serious discussion about just how much life has really changed for children from the last century until today.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-8. In Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story (1996), Warren told the riveting drama of a destitute child sent from an eastern city to find a family in the Midwest. For this collective biography, she interviewed eight people who lived that story, all of whom are now in their eighties and nineties. It's a selective sample--these are people who really want to look back and talk about their lives--and their stories are overwhelmingly positive: moving accounts of love and acceptance, courage and resilience, success, even reunion. Many also remember the anguish before the happy ending-- the nightmare of siblings torn apart, orphans treated as hired help, teased at school, abused at home. Younger readers won't be particularly interested in the adult experiences or in the photos of the adults with their families now, but the childhood memories are unforgettable. Warren frames the personal stories with commentary and information about social conditions at the time. She also raises essential questions: Would the children have done better if they had been left in orphanages? And what about today's foster children? This is powerful nonfiction for classroom and personal reading and for discussion. Warren includes Web sites of primary sources for children who want to learn more. Hazel Rochman

Wonderful stories of sadness and happiness that show that in the end it was so much better to move west than sit in an orphanage with little hope for the future. Tells how many found the homes of love. There is a photo of Sister Irene (founder) and children in the New York Foundling Home where my grandmother resided at the same time. She was sent west on the Orphan Train at age 4-5 but had fond memories of the nuns.

Time and destiny
By Leo
Sinhue is just like you and me, growing up in a fast changing world and facing challenging obstacles.
Living day to day with certainties and confusions that plague all human beings evolving in a life that resembles our own in so many ways...
The scenery to this story is the middle empire in Egipt, the Pharaho, Amenothep IV reigns under the name of Akenaton and Amon-Ra has fallen to the Sun disk, Aton, the new god that reigns unchallenged in heaven.
As feelings stir passions also love and friendship are set ablaze.
As the tides of events calm down so does age set in and calm reigns again in Egipt and in Sinhue's heart...
Tutankamon, the child Pharaho reings again to reestablish Amon-Ra from defeat to splendor !
Memories of golden times and of great feats, long gone friends and a lost love, a tragic beginning in a cane basket going down the Nile.
Is destiny repeating itself?
Beautifull novel, set in historic events.

¡Estupendo!

By Alfredo Salazar Orellana
