About the Author

Howard Karger is Professor and Head of School, The University of Queensland. Howard was formerly Professor at the Graduate College of Social Work, University of Houston, and for seven years headed their doctoral program. He has been on the faculties of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Louisiana State University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

 

Prof. Karger is an internationally recognized scholar in social welfare policy, and has authored or co-authored 10 books and more than 80 articles and book chapters. His articles have appeared in major social work and social policy journals in the U.S. and abroad. Howard sits on the editorial boards of six journals.

 

Among his other books are Shortchanged: Life and Debt in the Fringe Economy (Berrett-Koehler, 2005), which won the 2006 Independent Publishers Award in Economics/Finance/ Investment.

 

Prof. Karger is a two-time Senior Fulbright Scholar, having done postings at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1989) and the University of Zimbabwe (1994).

 

David Stoesz is Professor of Social Work at Mississippi Valley State University.

Informative and concise

I read this book (in conjunction with other texts) for a graduate section of a Social Policies class, and was impressed with the ease both authors transformed the abstract and dry into something exciting and inspiring.
No, social policy is not the most glamorous field for college students to enter, and unarguably the American system's shrinkage is going to pose severe problems in the next couple of years, but emotional and moral rewards of doing what is right make this venture worth it. Alternately, the authors balance this view with pragmatic political approaches that equip the reader with introductory strategies to hold off or even staunch further erosion of American social policy.
The book by itself is enjoyable, but advanced classes should use the American Welfare State as a supplementary text for historical background.

Clear language, comprehensive

I've been reading Karger and Stoesz for years. This is a good, relevant edition to understanding social welfare policy. However, the 4th edition leaves out the historical perspectives; readers will want to refer to earlier editions or supplemental sources for historical content.

Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors uses a new, unifying conceptual framework to identify the shared features underlying structural obstacles to innovation in major Legacy sectors: energy, air and auto transport, the electric power grid, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, health care delivery and higher education, and develops approaches to understand and transform them. It finds both strengths and obstacles to innovation in the national innovation environments - a new concept that combines the innovation system and the broader innovation context - for a group of Asian and European economies.

Manufacturing is a major Legacy sector that presents a particular challenge because it is a critical stage in the innovation process. By increasingly offshoring production, the U.S. is losing important parts of its innovation capacity. "Innovate here, produce here," where the U.S. took all the gains of its strong innovation system at every stage, is being replaced by "innovate here, produce there," which threatens to lead to "produce there, innovate there."

To bring innovation to Legacy sectors, authors William Bonvillian and Charles Weiss recommend that policymakers focus on all stages of innovation from research through implementation. They should fill institutional gaps in the innovation system and take measures to address structural obstacles to needed disruptive innovations. In the specific case of advanced manufacturing, the production ecosystem can be recreated to reverse "jobless innovation" and add manufacturing-led innovation to the U.S.'s still-strong, research-oriented innovation system.

About the Author

William B. Bonvillian is Director of the MIT Washington Office. Previously, he served as a senior advisor in the U.S. Senate. He has taught technology policy at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and MIT. He has served on a National Academies' Board and five Committees, received the IEEE Distinguished Public Service Award and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a frequent speaker on science and technology policy topics. Early in his career, he served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Transportation, and was a partner at a major national law firm.

Charles Weiss was Distinguished Professor of Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service until his retirement in 2014. He was STIA director from 1997-2006 and the first Science and Technology Adviser to the World Bank. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has a B.A. in chemistry and physics, summa cum laude, and a Ph.D. in chemical physics and biochemistry, both from Harvard University.

Meh. If she wasn't 31 I'd assume this was a New Adult story.

I couldn't buy that that she was still so dysfunctional 15 years after a being raped by her boyfriend. Yes, it was her first time having sex and it was wrong of him to continue after she said no but her devastation seemed a little out of proportion. The guys were very hot, extremely caring and were the only thing that kept me reading. The mystery was a nonstarter and very predictable.

Mari Carr, Mari Carr you can write menage like no one else can!!!!! Yes girl well and the boys too or I should say MEN. I know when my kindle buzzes a Mari Carr book is there I need to open a bottle of wine and relax it is time to chill out because the girl is bring on the HEAT** She never fails.

In this book we have Jeannette, she works at her family owned Barbeque Restaurant. There are two sexy as sin firemen who come in all the time and eat at the counter. They are always trying to get her to go out with them. YES THEM~! They date together as in double date 2 guys one gal. That is their thing and it works for them. She turns them down night after night and they keep asking.

Jeannette heard her ex boyfriend from high school and his brother were back in town to take care of their uncle who was sick. She wanted nothing to do with her ex but her cousin keeps pushing them together, LUC and Diego see there is something wrong and step in.

This story is not for the faint of heart. It does have some triggers. At least it did for me but it helped me to deal with an issue in my past at a time I really needed to deal with it. This book deals with depression but it also has some very steam and sexy hot menage scenes in it that burn up the sheets,

Mari this is one of your best books and I know it could not have been easy to write but I thank you for writing it.

A Thoughtful, Sexy Romance with a Mystery

This is the first of the Sparks books I've read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my fave types of books are menage and I was happy to add this one to my library.
I found Jeannette to be an interesting character and the things she's gone through had me in tears. Luc and Diego made me smile, they wanted her from the moment they saw her and they never gave up.
There is even a mystery which rounded out a perfect read for me. And the conclusion of the mystery? The person I thought was doing it, *grin* wasn't.
I'd recommend this to anyone that likes romance, mystery and menages.

Diamond Dust is full of treasures of short stories!

If you don't know Anita Desai, the Indian-German writer and author, you should get to know her. She might be the next Nobel Prize winner in literature. This compilation of short stories was picked up by me at a drugstore for only a dollar. The short stories include in this selection are Royalty, Winterscape about an Canadian Indian man and his unusual parentage, Diamond Dust which is truly a tragedy about a beloved animal, Underground about a British couple traveling abroad, The Man Who Saw Himself Drown is an unusual but entertaining story, The Artist's Life, Five Hours to Simla or Faisla, Tepozlan Tomorrow, and The Rooftop Dwellers. Desai's writing style is packed with details and information about the characters, the setting, and the story involved. Desai's writing style is easy to read but you have to read closely to really appreciate her style and language use. I loved Winterscape the best so far, broke my heart in Diamond Dust, was amused by a man who saw himself drown and lived to tell about it, and I'm working through the rest but I bet she doesn't disappoint her readers.

Absolutely ridiculous!!

If I had known there was another book in this series I would have never read it. Each Of the books are actually chapters and for the life of me I do not understand the purpose. Quantity is not more important than quality and some of the content is just disgusting. What woman goes into a public bathroom and allows one to release himself in her mouth. Cullen was a horrible person although the the author never got to the dark side of his personality, even after seven books, no chapters! REALLY, THESE CHAPTERS DO NOT DESERVE ANY STARS BUT I COULD NOT SUBMIT WITHOUT GIVING IT SOMETHING.

I will admit that I like the mystery but I can't keep up. I read too much to remember all of these bits and pieces. I really don't like BDSM and I'm finding it hard to like either one of these characters. Ivy slowed a hint of backbone for a brief second and then gave in again. I will hold out for one more to see if she will grow a spine and stand up for herself because right now she is pathetic. I can't stand a weak woman and she had turned stupid and weak. He is mean and hopefully will start showing something endearing about himself or I am done with this.

Wowza! Commit is the seventh book in Kelly Favor's riveting new serial, The Billionaire's Rules and it totally rocks! This is my very first time reading Favor's work but I must say, I am impressed with what I've read so far. This is a serial folks so there will be multiple installments and dare I say it, cliffhangers. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. Beautiful, shy virgin who discovers that she loves to submit-check! Office politics, drama, secrets, domination, consequences, punishment, blackmail, possible corporate espionage, a claimed FBI investigation and maybe even murder-check! A private jet and a quick but very eventful trip to Vegas-check! Heated attraction, sexy seduction, fiery passion, steamy sex and agonizing angst-you bet! Oh my God! This story just gets better and better! The story is smart, exciting, fast-paced, suspenseful, compelling, arousing and seductive. The dialogue is smart, well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are intriguing, captivating, engaging and sexy. Seriously sexy and definitely entertaining! OMG! This just gets better and better!!! I can hardly wait for the next installment!

Marissa Williams, New Orleans debutante, travels by stage coach to begin her new life with her Uncle George after the death of her father. At a stage coach way station, Marissa survives a raid by a Comanche camp, however she is taken as captive. She is given to Wind Ryder as a gift because of a vision the tribes Chief, and also Wind Ryder's adoptive father, because she is to bring peace to the tribe. The surprise to Marissa is that Wind Ryder is a white man, taken as a captive as a young boy, and raised in the Comanche camp.
After denying his white heritage for years, Wind Ryder is surprised by the feelings Marissa (Shining Spirit) brings out in him, including a longing to return to the white world. After the death of his father, and a battle with his adoptive brother, Wind Ryder takes Marissa and returns her to her Uncle and the white world.
Lone Warrior is a great book. The struggle of Marissa at the Comanche camp and the struggle of Zach when he returns to the white world is written smoothly, with many supporting characters to make the book interesting. I highly recommend this book.

In the late 1870s at a Texas way station, Chief Ten Crow leads a band of Comanches on a raid that results in the death of Marissa Williams' traveling companion Louise Bennett. When Ten Crow notices Marissa he recognizes her as the woman in his visions. With everyone else left dead, the Comanche ride off with Marissa as a captive.

Ten Crow believes Marissa is an augur of peace and gives her to his adoptive son Wind Ryder, an action that angers his biological son Bear Claw who has always jealously detested his "brother". Marissa is shocked further to realize her "intended" is a white man but even more emotionally devastating she falls in love with him. He reluctantly reciprocates. When the chief dies, Wind Ryder no longer feels at home with the Comanche as his only tether is gone. He leaves with Marissa, but their adventures are just beginning, as he has one foot in either world.

LONE WARRIOR is an exciting western romance starring two strong protagonists and a deep supporting cast that includes an enticing secondary love subplot. The story line is fast-paced coming out of the chute and never slows down until the plot crosses the finish line. Yet the relationship between Marissa and Wind Ryder seems contrived as she falls in real love (as opposed to the capture-prisoner Stockholm Syndrome) too fast with all that activity that happened to her in such a short time. Still sub-genre fans will delight in Bobbi Smith's non-stop action-jammed historical romance.
